Lenny Johnrose – once a Shaker, always a Shaker

Lenny Johnrose – once a Shaker, always a Shaker

We’re incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of former player Len Johnrose.

Len passed away on Monday 15th August, after a long battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Len was signed by Mike Walsh in 1993 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, scoring many important goals. The tough-tackling, box-to-box central midfielder formed a brilliantly effective partnership with Nick Daws, and was a key part of one of the greatest Bury teams that achieved successive promotions from the fourth to the second tier. He even returned to Gigg for a short spell in the 2002/03 playoff season.

We loved hearing Len tell all the stories of his time at Bury FC in a special evening with him back in 2018, and Len made an emotional return to Gigg Lane for the recent Legends game – reuniting with the 1997 Division 1 title-winning squad and gaffer Stan Ternent.

Len was a role model and inspiration on and off the pitch and showed the same bravery throughout his illness as he did on the pitch. His Trust has raised money and awareness of MND, that helped not only Len, but many more sufferers and their families.

Our thoughts are with Len’s family and friends at this very sad time. We love you and miss you.
