Legends success!

The Bury FC Legends v Burnley Legends game at Gigg Lane on Sunday 17th July 2022 was a huge success and played out in front of 2,885 spectators!

An early start for the army of volunteers ensured the safety checks were completed, the stadium was set up, and there were no issues on the day. The beer and burger van queues commenced, kiosks opened and the supporters flowed into a carnival atmosphere at our famous ground.

The game featured a star-studded Legends team with most of the title-winning squad from 1997. They had been looking forward to playing once again under gaffer Stan Ternent ever since it was announced that Gigg Lane was back in the hands of the fans. The Burnley side were cheered on by around 300 Clarets’ supporters, with over 2,500 Shakers fans watching on in a mix of their new-look Legends shirts and classic shirts from our glorious history.

The game ended in defeat for the Shakers – losing narrowly 2-1 to a strong Clarets XI. Andy Payton grabbed both for Burnley, whilst Lutel James scored what will become an iconic goal at Gigg.

Don’t forget – you can get your Legends shirts and other merchandise through our online shop with MOTIQ here:

It was a delight to see Bury FC hero Lenny Johnrose there to meet the players on the pitch before kickoff. The Len Johnrose Trust recieved £2,957 from the Bury Football Club Company Limited and we are proud to support a cause so close to supporters’ hearts.

The game could have only happened thanks to almost 2,000 volunteers who have worked on the stadium since it was opened for The Gigg Cleanup. The continous support we have from our members and the Bury community is magnificent, and we would like to place on record a huge thank you to all those who have helped. The ground continues to be open at weekends for volunteers to assist with the continuous clean-up operation – and of course the hire of the stadium.

We are now in the process of putting all our match-worn shirts online for auction to raise additional funds to support the renovation and refurbishment of Gigg Lane – so look out for an announcement!

The board of Bury Football Club Supporters Society and the Bury Football Club Benefactors cannot thank every single supporter enough for the success of the event!

Rest assured, we have more superb events lined up for the community of Bury and Shakers Supporters!

If you want to play at the home of Bury & the Bury legends you can now book Gigg Lane and run out as a true Shaker !!
