The Arthur Ashworth Stand is unveiled

Gigg Lane reopened its doors in February 2022 and a big reason behind that was the work of major benefactor Peter Alexander.

Peter was brought to Gigg as a child by his grandfather and that’s where his love for Bury FC began, “Arthur Ashworth was my grandfather and he and his 8 brothers were Shakers fans. In my
childhood we lived in Gorton, and my granddad would take two buses to get to the games, often taking myself or one of my two cousins with him.”

Peter was one of the benefactors who, together with Bury FC Supporters’ Society, helped raise the funds required to purchase the stadium, IP, history and memorabilia of Bury FC. Those involved with the mammoth task of making this a reality said from the start that we wanted to show our thanks to Peter for everything he has done. Even though it wasn’t a requirement for his help, he asked what he thought a suitable gesture might be. Peter felt that it would be lovely for his grandfather to be recognised as a symbol of the countless fans who have watched the Shakers over so many years.

Yesterday the Cemetery End was unveiled with the name of a true Bury FC fan – as the Arthur Ashworth Stand.

A spokesperson from the Society added, “We would like to thank Peter for his support in getting Project Gigg Lane up and running. He has showed his commitment to the cause as the current largest benefactor, but also through his support for events and games at the stadium. The opportunity to thank him for his donation and work was one which we felt would be ideal to honour his grandfather. We as the Society understand our members have trust issues due to problems with previous owners of the club, but we would like to acknowledge our thanks to Peter with this gesture.”

Peter wanted to continue to spread a message of unity for the fanbase, “There is so much we can do together with the best of all we have. Special thanks must go to the Bury FC Supporters’ Society, the other benefactors, and the former members of Est. 1885.”
